You'll often find yourself not hitting enemies or not grabbing things when you mean to and it just kind of stinks, and it did even when it came out (but at the time the game was visually gorgeous so it was easier to forgive). I don't think the game is difficult - it's more frustrating than anything, specifically because of the controls. Its art is really quite nice, but it suffers from a problem common to games of the mid-90s with nice art direction like that (Earthworm Jim also comes to mind) - sometimes it can be hard to tell exactly where you're jumping/hitting/etc. It's a little frustrating difficulty-wise, and the controls are not really up to snuff. I don't think the original Rayman has aged particularly well. People didn't know what to expect, there's no key Rayman identity that people could rely on. Personally, I believe that the inconsistency of the tone/lore of the franchise is what stalled the sales of these (individually excellent) games. The only overlap I could find is: Rayman as a character, the cages, and the fact that it is a platformer. Instead of learning powers, you only increase your fist power slightly. It has a more consistent world, not themed after abstract things like paintbrushes or music notes. It's not specifically hard, especially compared to Rayman 1 It throws out ALL characters except Rayman himself (and the first boss of Rayman is a decorative NPC) It does not have a life system, only a health bar. It has a much darker tone, and is sometimes even scary for kids. It focuses on storytelling instead of only having an intro. In fact, except for being a platformer, it's different in almost every aspect. Rayman 2 is indeed a vastly different game.
